The Wood-Hagenbarth Cattle Company, headquartered in Salt Lak City, Utah, was established in 1902 when James David Wood purchased the stock of the Palomas Land and Cattle Company which was located in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico. The expanse of the property totaling in excess of 2.4 million acres represented one of the largest cattle ranches in the world and was twice the size of the state of Rhode Island. Prior to the acquisition of the Palomas company, Wood owned the largest sheep ranching business in the United States and was involved in the mining industry in Idaho, Utah, and Nevada. He also was the owner of a Utah canning factory.
