A1890 Gold Bond of
The Columbus , Shawnee and Hocking Railway Company.
This is no 2530 valued at 00 at the time of issue, the issue was limited to ,000,000.
The bond id 14" x 10", contains two sheets of coupons, of which nine (9) were used up, the tenth is dangling.
Well, who knew that the little choo-choo train in Nelsonville, OH goes back that far! (If that's the train from the bond.)
And who knew, there was coal mining in Hocking Hills?! I live in the "area", suburb of Columbus, and had no idea that was the case,
What prompted me to investigate, are these two intriguing illustrations at the top of the bond. They show miners working in a mine.
And, yes, there was a coal mining boom in Hocking Valley 1880 - 1920. The area was considered "one of most important coal field in Northern Appalachia."
Bedsides the coal, the area yielded iron ore, clay and oil, and three competing railroad companies (presumably
The Columbus , Shawnee and Hocking Railway Company one of them)
rushed to lay track to get the natural riches out.
