North American Land Company
Spanning 6,000,000 acres in 5 states, the North American Land Company's holdings were of immense size. Established on February 20, 1795, the North American land Company was headed by a number of wealthy financiers of the the time with Robert Morris as president.
Morris, who was instrumental in maintaining the United States' financial stability during the Revolutionary War, signs the stock as president. In addition to financing the revolution, he was a Signer of the Declaration of independence, a member of the Pennsylvania General Assembly, a delegate to the Annapolis Convention, a member of the Constitutional Convention and a U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania. His financial downfall came when extensive land speculations in which he was engaged collapsed, and his prestige was demolished when a small creditor caused him to be confined (Feb. 1798 - Aug, 1801) in Philadelphia's debtors' prison. Broken in body and spirit, he died in 1806.
The certificate is quite large and printed on early tan paper with a large, bold signature of Morris, making this another very desireable piece.
