Description
Rare, vintage collectible stock certificate. Most of the old Exxon certificates were destroyed when they were turned in for shares of the newly-formed Exxon Mobil Corp. (NYSE: XOM) - see photos. This certificate is in excellent condition and was cancelled in 1977. The printer was the iconic American Bank Note Company - engraver of stamps, currency and stock and bond certificates for over 150 years. This is absolutely authentic, NOT a reproduction. As many of you already know, paper stock and bond certificates have nearly completely gone away in favor of electronic 'book-entry' share ownership. Physical certificates have become very collectible, and an important part of Wall Street history. Unlike collectibles such as sports cards, stamps, coins, etc. where millions are still being produced each year, the available supply of stock certificates is now nearly finite.
History:
Exxon
is the brand
name of the former oil
company
Exxon Corporation
(formerly known as the
Standard Oil Company of New Jersey
until 1973).
In 1999, Exxon Corporation merged with
Mobil
to form
ExxonMobil
. The
Exxon
brand is still used by ExxonMobil's downstream
operations as a brand for certain gas stations, motor fuel and related products (the highest concentration of which are located in
New Jersey
,
Pennsylvania
,
Texas
and in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeastern states). Standard Oil Company of New Jersey was one of the
Seven Sisters
that dominated the global petroleum industry from the mid-1940s to the 1970s.
