Description
KM 307.3, nine year type. Silver crown, which has been struck over another silver crown. I have not attributed the host coin, but it is Spanish. To escape French forces under Napoleon, the Portuguese court fled to Brazil, and did not return until 1822. The silver mines of Brazil were under British control, so the Portuguese had to use Spanish colonial and other silver coins as the planchets for their coins!
Spanish silver coins, including colonial coins, were legal tender in the United States until 1857. Brazilian silver coins were not legal tender--unless a Spanish undertype could be identified on the coin!
