    Description
    1933 0 Postal Savings Bond
This is one of the rarest US Bond's I have ever had the opportunity to handle.  It's a 0 Postal Savings Coupon Bond, also known as a bearer bond.  It bears the portrait of Grover Cleveland.  It also has gold/orange colored seals, similar to the ones used on 1922 gold certificates.  The paper these were printed on is also the same paper as large size US paper money...look closely and you will see red and blue security fibers.
The bond is dated July 1, 1933 and here's how it works.  They were available for purchase at the Post Office for 0 and returned 2.5% interest per year.  The bond had 40 coupons attached and every six months you would clip off a coupon and cash it at the bank or post office.  Each coupon had a value of .25.  The coupons were just as good as cash...many businesses even accepted the coupons as payment towards goods.  Since the bond wasn't registered to a specific individual, anyone could cash the coupon.  The interest was tax free.  Once all the coupons matured  in 1953, you can redeem the bond portion for your initial 0.
This bond is incredibly rare.  They were issued in denominations of and 0 also.  I have seen a couple examples of registered Postal Bonds but never a coupon bond...let alone a 0 denomination!  John Herzog assembled one of the greatest US bond collections which he sold in 2018.  He only had a specimen version but not a genuine issued coupon bond like this.  This bond was issued in the midst of the Great Depression, when the average weekly salary was only /week.  Just think about how wealthy someone had to be to tie up 0 for 20 years.  Very few of these were issued compared to lower denominations.
This bond transcends many areas of collectibles...financial history, philatelics and even paper money due to it's striking resemblance to old US banknotes.  The bond is in great shape...well preserved and original.  It has one fold between the bond and coupons.
